Well, they only ban it for citations, not for all purposes. Which I think is fair. I don't think you should be allowed to cite Wikipedia. I don't think you should be able to cite encyclopedias in general. I think they should be used for sleuthing only.
One thing I find extremely interesting is that in this and other incidents I've heard of in which instructors are displeased when they find incorrect Wikipedia information because students have cited/quoted it, the instructors never take it upon themselves to correct the Wikipedia article. I think that says something a little sad about academic knowledge.
